In my new placement I have really gained a new lease on teaching. I am in a grade 7 homeroom and being able to spend 1 on 1 time with a small group of students has been eye opening. I have always heard about the challenges of a homeroom and teaching all subjects to your students. The biggest challenge for me has been the ability range that my students possess and it highlights what we read in chapter 11 and 12 perfectly. In math we have students ranging from grade 2 to gr 11 in terms of their knowledge and skills and while some of it can be contributed to ability a lot of it has to do with how much attention has been shown to these kids in those areas. One student that is working at a gr 11 level goes to 3 different schools and is able to excel in those schools because he is always being challenged to keep improving on his gifts. All teachers get him into their class and love working with him because they see all the potential. One student that works at a grade 2 level has clearly been passed along by her previous teachers because it is too much work to get her caught up. I worked with her for 2 weeks straight and everyday she would complain how much she hated math but clearly she lacked the confidence and I encouraged her every time to keep trying and not give up. We found her a math workbook and now she looks forward to math and especially Wednesdays because we are able to work one on one and she is happy to share with me all the work she has been able to do during the week. I have been guilty of brushing past her at times because I know that her ability level is low in most areas but when you sit down and talk to her she has a lot of hidden knowledge that she just isn't confident to share with a big group so it is my goal to help bring that out of her and help make school fun for her again.
