My first day actually started the night before when I got an email about a possible switch for my placement. The new school would of been a lot more convenient for me to get too but the switch was not able to be made and I am certainly glad to have this opportunity. Like most of us I was nervous for my first day and a little anxious I like to get things started so the bus ride seemed extra long but when I entered the school all of my nerves faded away the rest of teacher candidates were already there and we were greeted by the Vice principal who introduced us to our associate teachers. My AT Brett Smith was outside on duty and when I met him he gave me this puzzled look it was because I was all dressed up for my first day and he was wearing a superman t shirt and a chicago bears hat. He told me to go change into some gym clothes and I instantly felt fully comfortable. When we met back outside for duty we began talking and it is really funny how small the world is he began asking me question about school and if I had ever played for the Geegees and I told him I did he then asked me if I knew any guys he might of coached and it turns out he coached one of my old roommates in high school football and this helped spark a lot of the conversation throughout the day. At Henry Munro the students participate in Phys. Ed. everyday which was really cool to see but that meant a lot of students to get to know. before the second period began was when I got my first opportunity to interact with some students on a personal level, at Henry Munro the have what is called a BIP program which stands for...and allows certain students with special needs to be looked after in a small group and integrated in the rest of the school when it is presents the best learning opportunity and at the beginning of second period I got to walk with two of the students from the BIP class named Mackenzie and Deandre. When we first met Mackenzie immediately asked me about my my bands that I wear and that got us talking about families and schools I learned that she wished she was back in Gr 6 and I asked her why she felt that way and she told me that she wanted to stay at Henry Munro for 3 more years which definitely spoke to the positive environment at Henry Munro and made me more excited to get involved with the students and staff. During the 3rd period off the day Mr Smith had the period off and he took me on a tour of the school and we spent a good amount of time in the office talking to the principal and the office administrator who were amazing and a lot of fun to talk to. During the day I got to participate in the Phys. Ed. classes and they were in the middle of a combined cross country and frisbee unit where the students would began the class by running a lap of the cross country course then worked on the skills they had been learning with throwing and catching a frisbee. For the first couple of classes I just walked around and answered a few questions the students had but during 4th period a student named Geraldine tugged at my shirt and asked if I would be her partner. I was a little surprised because most students are a little intimidated to approach me at first but she jumped right in there and we had a great conversation about sports and her plan for next year going into gr.9. These experiences definitely calmed any doubt that I had and reassured me that I was in the right field. I can't wait to get back there next wednesday.
